Dr. Charles A. Garcia is an
internationally recognized researcher and
clinician. As a graduate of Tulane
University he completed his residency
and internship at The University of Texas
Medical School at Houston. His post
residency fellowship in Cornea and
External Disease under Dr. Dan Brown at
Baylor College of Medicine in 1970. His
clinical practice focuses on diagnosis of
various vitreo retinal diseases and he has
worked throughout his career on finding
a treatment for Retinitis Pigmentosa and
Retinal Dystrophies.

He has special interest in innovative therapies for macular degeneration and
inherited retinal diseases. He also provides comprehensive general
ophthalmology including cataract and glaucoma surgery.
Dr. Garcia is the Bernice Weingarten Distinguished Professor of
Ophthalmology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He has
written extensively in peer reviewed journals and books about ophthalmology
and retinal diseases in particular. He has published more than 175 articles and
has written three books in English and Spanish.
In addition to numerous universities in the US, he has presented scientific
papers in 16 other countries. He has been active in training both surgical and
research fellows since 1974 and has trained more than 68 fellows from 21
different countries. As former President of the American Diabetes Association,
Dr. Garcia has worked with local community organizations to educate the
public about diseases of the eye and diabetes.
He continues to participate in clinical studies with the National Institutes of
Health and the National Eye Institute investigating progression of diabetic
retinopathy.
